BIMSON HUMANITIES SEMINAR July 2021:

CRAFTING INNOVATIVE SPACES

“Playrooms and games, animals and plants, wood and nails must take their place side-by-side with books and words” – Angelo Patri

Succeeding in today's technologically competitive world requires a person to develop and use a different set of skills than what was needed in the past. (Shute & Becker, 2010). One of the essential skills is called design thinking - generally defined as “an analytic and creative process that engages a person in opportunities to experiment, create and prototype models, gather feedback, and redesign.” (Razzouk & Shute, 2012).

We mean to put forward a proposal that engages K-12 teachers in a form of design thinking which they can then in turn bring to their own classrooms across the state of Colorado. The charrette will give the K–12 teachers hands-on experience with activities and methodologies commonly used in the human-centered design discipline.

This seminar will host guest Architect Aaron Jones. Jones will lead a workshop that investigates the idea of space and installation.

Jones has been the creative lead on a variety of similar projects: creating a mobile art installation that functions as “a performance, workshop space, and visual arts exhibition”; creating a solar array powered structure that is “a mashup of greenhouse by day / movie theater by night”; and a project that “fused avant-garde music with immersive architectural installations into an apparatus for sensory escape”. Jones works collaboratively and thoughtfully with communities that he builds projects with.

For this proposal he will engage the teachers in a discussion of the design problems inherent in the space; investigate who the space will be used by; and model potential methods of research. Thus, the charrette is focused around the work and vision of an acknowledged and accomplished designer; a masterclass.
