On Wednesday, March 30, the CSU Department of Art and Art History will host a book launch event in collaboration with Women’s Art Wednesday to celebrate the release of their new book, Women’s Art Wednesday: A Woman Artist for Every Week of the Year. The event will be held in Mindock Hall at the CSU alumni center from 5-7pm. The founders of Women’s Art Wednesday will share a brief overview of the project and their collaboration with the current ART314 class to create a series of Women’s Art Wednesday posts. Additionally, WAW will have hardcover copies of the book available for signing and purchase. CSU printmaker Grace Bocklemann will operate a make-your-own bookmark station. Light refreshments will be served.

WAW began as a social media hashtag initiative to highlight women artists, and their work, every week in 2018. Over the years, WAW has grown into an organization which hosts shows and collaborates with other historians and institutions to uplift women artists in addition to weekly posts showcasing women artists in history and today. Core to the WAW philosophy is generating information that is easily shared on free platforms (like websites and social media) and enjoyably consumed by readers of all levels. The WAW voice focuses on accessible language and a tone that is both conversational and informational, as we believe art history—and women’s contributions to it—should be accessible to everyone.

Women’s Art Wednesday: A Woman Artist for Every Week of the Year features 52 short biographies on women artists. The entries are stand-alone and written to be digestible starting points about women artists for art historians and non-art historians alike. The tone focuses on accessible language, humor, and information on the historical context of women working in a variety of time periods and art movements. Also displayed in the book are original hand-painted illustrations of women artists in history by the illustrators at Studio Patten, a design studio based in Spain. Ten entries in the Women’s Art Wednesday book are dedicated to contemporary women artists working across many mediums, including glass art, ceramics, painting, sculpture, and fashion design. The WAW book features images of the contemporary artist’s work and resources to follow them.
