Shifting Gears is the product of the hard work of individuals in Katie Simmons’ ART235 (Drawing Materials and Methods) class and is being hosted by the Art Lab in Fort Collins. One of the classes primary goals this fall semester has been to question why those in the “art world” often make a distinction made between “art” and “student art”.

Collectively, the class has pushed themselves to explore different substrates, mediums, and processes in order to question this division. In doing so, we’re attempting to help bridge the gap among students, instructors and the CSU community. The class is responsible for making the art, curating the exhibit, writing wall text, installation, and deinstallation. The show will feature two guest jurors, cash prizes for winning artists, free food, and DIY art activities for the public. Intended to be an immersive, the class provides a sense of one path that students can takes as artists.
