Recent Works by Shelby Marie Skumanich is an exhibition of textile work that explores themes of transformation, the construct of femininity, and home. She is the Department’s Communications Specialist and is excited to be sharing her artwork with the CSU community.

As an artist whose textile work focuses on autobiographical, abstract modern quilts, Skumanich sees her quilts as a form of alchemy: a process of transformation and creation. Her quilts are made from many pieces of fabric in the way life is composed of many of pieces: communities, relationships, work, leisure, birth, death, joy, sorrow, contentment, dissatisfaction, order, upheaval By gathering fabrics from conventional and unconventional sources and stitching them together, she makes sense of identity and her journey. Each quilt is a document and the completion of a quilt is the close of a chapter. Like the many quiltmakers that have come before her, she puts her spirit, energy, vitality and skill into a quilt to tell the story of her life.
