An internationally recognized poster designer and longtime Colorado State University professor, Phil Risbeck helped shape CSU’s graphic design program and built a creative legacy that reached far beyond Fort Collins.
Risbeck joined the Department of Art and Art History faculty in 1965 after earning his MFA from the University of Kansas, where his studies included work with influential Bauhaus designer Herbert Bayer. Over the decades that followed, Risbeck’s work appeared in prestigious juried and invitational exhibitions around the world.
This retrospective brings together a selection of Risbeck’s posters spanning more than 50 years, including early works that have not been exhibited at CSU in decades. Together, they offer a glimpse into both Risbeck’s evolving design practice and the cultural life of CSU reflected in the events, performances and organizations he designed for.
Presented as a satellite exhibition of the Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE), the exhibition also looks outward to Risbeck’s international influence. Designers and artists who knew, worked with or were inspired by Risbeck were invited to create original posters in his memory. Their contributions, displayed alongside work by CSU Graphic Design alumni, offer a contemporary tribute to Risbeck’s lasting impact as an artist, educator, colleague and mentor.
