This year we are continuing with our popular Faculty Research Showcase, which takes place at the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters. Next Thursday’s Showcase features Associate Professor Paul Flippen (Painting and Foundations) and Associate Professor Cyane Tornatzky (Electronic Art) who will share process-based insights into their current work connected to the theme of first-person narrative in art. The Faculty Research Showcase offers an opportunity to learn about the latest developments in our faculty’s creative work in a lively, welcoming, and conversational setting. The talk will happen in F113.

All are welcome!

Paul Flippen was born in Berlin, Germany, and as an Army Brat bounced between Germany, Texas, and California at the whim of the Pentagon. He earned a BFA in Painting and a BA in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin. He completed his studies at Pratt Institute, New York, receiving an MFA in Painting and an MS in the Theory, Criticism and History of Art. He’ll be talking about his work The Talk, which depicts the important if awkward moments when a stepfather and his teenage son engage an ongoing discussion of sex. Articulating notions of sexuality beyond mere mechanics, The Talk is a narrative of an adult offering honest, if embarrassed, guidance – addressing pleasure and consent, responsibility and joy, exploration and emotion.

Cyane Tornatzky is the founder of the Department of Art and Art History’s Electronic Art Program. Her background is in new media art with a focus on digital and interactive installation. Tornatzky’s current research focuses on virtual reality as an art form, with a special interest in VR’s technological predecessors. Her works integrate both historical and contemporary techniques and has been displayed in venues such as Meow Wolf’s Denver Convergence Station and Denver’s Buell Theater. Additionally, Tornatzky is a primary researcher (Co-PI) for a project creating a virtual reality simulator for veterinary training. In print media, Cyane Tornatzky is under contract with Taylor & Francis/Routledge to co-author a book on artists working in the medium of VR.
