The Hatton Gallery is excited to present Affective Tone by visiting artist Adán De La Garza. Based in Denver, Colorado, and an anonymous member of the curatorial Collective Misnomer, Adán De La Garza’s work incorporates performance, sound, photography, and video and is made with a strong punk ethos.
Usurping the power of a sound requires a lot of thought, time, and endurance. Art doesn’t need to be pleasant and when it reflects the human state it typically isn’t. Utilizing an array of different audio technology with origins from the military-industrial complex, Affective Tone explores the sonic terrain where noise music and military-influenced sonic warfare cross over one another.
Diving deeper into the notion of noise music and deliberately experiencing noise as a preparatory measure to understand the impending infliction of sonic warfare onto citizens, the hope is to develop a broader understanding of the weaponizing of sound and become more resilient to sonic dominance and manipulation as a population. Affective Tone is part of an ongoing body of compositions.
